Book Beginning: Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman by Alice Steinbach

Dear Alice, Each morning I am awakened by the sound of a tinkling bell.

-- Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman by Alice Steinbach. Each chapter of this memoir starts with the text of a postcard the author sent home to herself while she spent a year in Europe, away from her job as a popular Baltimore journalist.

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

EARLY BIRDS & SLOWPOKES: This weekly post goes up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. But feel free to add a link all week.

FACEBOOK: Rose City Reader has a Facebook page where I post about new and favorite books, book events, and other bookish tidbits, as well as link to blog posts. I'd love a "Like" on the page! You can go to the page here to Like it. I am happy to Like you back if you have a blog or professional Facebook page, so please leave a comment with a link and I will find you.

TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, Instagram, Google+, or other social media, please post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I try to follow all Book  Beginnings participants on whatever interweb sites you are on, so please let me know if I have missed any and I will catch up.

TIE IN: The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice is a natural tie in with this event and there is a lot of cross over, so many people combine the two. The idea is to post a teaser from page 56 of the book you are reading and share a link to your post. Find details and the Linky for your Friday 56 post on Freda’s Voice.

  1. I think this book looks intriguing. Thanks for sharing, and for hosting.

  2. Is this a recent book or did it happen years ago? Either one would be good to me. My Friday Quotes

  3. I wish I did that more often--sent postcards to myself when traveling. It's a great idea. I like the sound of this memoir and hope it is good!

  4. I wish that I had had the courage to go off and make a trip like this when I was younger. Alice must have had such an amazing time, although I have no doubt that there were plenty of ups and downs along the way.

The idea of sending herself a postcard from each place she visited, is a lovely concept, as she now has a complete record of her travels, along with the authentic postmarks.

I follow a site on Twitter called 'Postcards From The Past' and I always enjoy ctaching up with their shares.

Thanks for hosting and sharing your book this week and Happy Reading :)

  5. Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman sounds like an interesting book. Thanks for mentioning it. Enjoy your current read!

  6. Sounds interesting! I'm always up for books about independent women.

  7. What a great idea to send yourself postcards. I wish I thought of that years ago. Sounds like an interesting book.

  8. I love how she travels to rediscover herself. We can get stuck in a rut and let what we "usually do" define us. Must be awesome to get the opportunity to break that mold.

  9. I read this one years ago and enjoyed it! It really made me want to travel. I hope you love it.

  10. I wish I had thought of doing that when I traveled in Europe. I did send my niece and nephew a postcard from each new country I visited.

  11. I agree with Yvonne. Sending yourself postcards is a wonderful idea. I usually journal when I travel, but having the images from the place would add so much more.

  12. Hope you have a lovely reading weekend!

  13. It sounds like an interesting read. Enjoy!
