Another good gambit, when a Potluck is under discussion, is to move in fast with the dessert. You say, "Girls, I'll bring my wonderful Hootenholler Whiskey Cake!"-- The I Hate to Cook Book by Peg Bracken (50th Anniversary Edition).
She goes on to give a recipe for some kind of easy, dense pound cake that you wrap in aluminum foil and keep in the fridge like a fruitcake for six months, adding extra whiskey occasionally.
