Book Notes: A Handful of Dust

A Handful of Dust struck me as a mix between Brideshead Revisited and Scoop. It starts off as an English country house drama, and ends up as an adventure story in the jungle. Huh? But it was entertaining through and through—Evelyn Waugh at his snarky best.

  1. I wanted to read Evelyn Waugh at some point in 2009. I chose The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold. Have you read this one? Which is your Waugh favorite?

  2. No, I haven't read The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold. And I confess I had not heard of it until your comment drove me to the Wikipedia entry on Waugh. I see it is his last novel. I'd be very interested to know what you think.

Brideshead Revisited is my favorite, although I have not read too many. There are a lot of layers to Brideshead worth pondering.

My 2009 list includes Waugh's short stories. I started the book this year, but only read one or two. I am going to dive in "next" year, although I probably won't start tomorrow. :)

  3. I have heard a lot about Brideshead Revisited. Maybe I'll put it on my list for Casual Classics.

  4. I've got this one on deck for a 2009 challenge. For some reason, I'm already convinced that I will love it!
