BOOK BEGINNINGS ON FRIDAYS
It's Friday! What are you reading? Are you looking forward to a weekend of books, or a weekend of summer fun -- or is that one and the same? I plan to read and putter, which is my usual weekend plan.
Please share the first sentence (or so) of your book with us here on Book Beginnings. Add the link to your post below and follow the links to visit other participants.
If you share on social media, please use the #bookbeginnings hashtag so we can find each other.
Have a great weekend!
MY BOOK BEGINNING
The two dreams could not be more contrasting. In one I am walking up the avenue, toward Drewsboro, the house I was born in, and it is a veritable temple.
-- Country Girl: A Memoir by Edna O'Brien. O'Brien is best known for her debut novel, Country Girls, which I haven't read yet. I haven't read any of her fiction yet, so starting with her memoir might be an odd choice. But I've read a fair bit about her and her memoir was calling to me, so I started with it.
It is one of the books I am reading for the 2020 Mt. TBR Challenge and my corresponding TBR 20 in 20 Challenge.

MY FRIDAY 56
Also in that dining room, my mother and I once nearly escaped death. my father had gone in there with a bottle of whiskey and a revolver that had belonged to my mother's brother, Captain Michael.
Country Girl is one I've been wanting to read. Thanks for sharing.ReplyDelete
That's quite a striking cover picture! I'm not familiar with this author. I'll be looking for your review.ReplyDelete
I find it so interesting that the photo shows the author smoking since cigarettes are definitely on the outs these days. Do they factor into her story? My quotes are from Mr. MercedesReplyDelete
Having read those intriguing opening lines, I now need to know what the second of her dreams was!
I too, have never read any of her books, but I do know that she could took quite a stand on the role of women in contemporary society, her books could be quite sexually explicit and some of them were banned in her native Ireland!
This memoir is going to be very candid, of that I am almost certain, so I look forward to seeing what you think of Edna O'Brien the person!
Thanks for sharing and hosting and I hope that you enjoy a peaceful weekend :)
I haven't read any of her books either, although I have heard, like Yvonne, that her books could be quite sexually explicit. I'll look out for your review.ReplyDelete
I've seen the name Edna O'Brien, but I've never read anything by her. I think it's a brilliant idea to read her memoir first!ReplyDelete
I also want to know what her second dream is?
Hope you will have a great weekend, here's my Weekend Book Friends
I don't usually read memoirs but this does sound like a good one. Have a great weekend!ReplyDelete
