December in Portland is a little different than December in my hometown of Austin. The wet Pacific Northwest weather didn’t stave off my hunger for learning about the food carts, but the daily drizzle and gray chilled my Texas-thin blood to the bone.

-- From the author’s Foreword to Portland Food Cart Stories: Behind the Scenes with the City’s Culinary Entrepreneurs by Steven Shomler.

Portland Food Cart Stories is more than a guide to Portland’s trendy eating scene. As promised, Shomer tells the stories of 30 food cart owners – how they got the idea for their carts, the crazy names, the sometimes insanely loyal followings, etc. You will feel like a friend next time you step up to the window.

Learn more at Shomler's website,; Facebook page, Portland Food Cart Adventures; and Twitter @GR8FoodCartsPDX. You can find his book at Powell's or on amazon.

  1. Sounds like this would be a fun one to browse.

  2. Oh, love the sound of this one!

  3. I love trying new food places, especially street food carts and trucks!

  4. Sounds good! I hope you're enjoying it.

  5. I've always wanted to visit Portland. You know, I've never eaten at a food cart - unless you count at fairs...

Check out my 56 (With Book Beginnings).

  6. Hi Gilion,

Food Cart eating is not a day to day thing, here in my part of the UK and there are certainly no designated food cart areas.

Food Carts are more the kind of thing we would see at a specific outdoor event, or at the fair, but even then the choice would be very limited and the quality not always the best!

Hubbie has visited and worked in the US many times and has told me about the food cart culture in many of the towns and cities, so this book would make for some great browsing!

Thanks for sharing, hosting BBOF and have a great weekend :)

  7. That will definitely make me hungry! I hope you enjoy the read! Thanks again for this fun meme.

  8. Sounds unusual, bit of a foodie so might be one to investigate further.

  9. Sounds like an interesting book :) I like the big about the Texas-thin blood lol.

  10. This book sounds really interesting

  11. We don't have food trucks are here. I think they'd be a big hit!

  12. It makes me think of some of the comments I read when the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck opened at a permanent location after their truck had become so popular.... comments along the lines of how it great it was for the employees to have easy access to bathrooms!

  13. Food carts have become the thing everywhere. Interesting to see a book about them.

  14. You always have the most interesting books.

    ENJOY, and thanks for sharing.
