Mailbox Monday
I had a busy book week, so my Mailbox Monday list is long (so long, I'm putting it up early).
First, Unbridled Books sent me A Geography of Secrets by Fredrick Reuss and, even though it is going on my Guilt List, it looks terrific. I can't wait to get to it.
Then, I went to the Great Northwest Benefit Book Sale and ended up with a crazy mix of books:
The Scottish Novels by Robert Lewis Stevenson (because I recently read Treasure Island and want to read more RLS)
Poems of John Donne (because I liked them in college -- at least that one about the flea -- and the cover was so adorable)
The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro (because he is a genius)
A Time of Hope by C. P. Snow (because I am gathering this edition of the Strangers and Brothers series)
Human Croquet by Kate Atkinson (because she is a new favorite)
Dancing at the Rascal Fair by Ivan Doig (because I've always meant to read at least one of his books)
Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann (because it won the National Book Award)
Making It Up by Penelope Lively (because she is an old favorite)
The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford (because I want to re-read this one and I loved the cover)
World Without End by Ken Follett (because I loved Pillars of the Earth and it is time for me to get to the sequel)
That Old Cape Magic and Bridge of Sighs by Richard Russo (because I liked Empire Falls and want to read more of his books)

You got a lot of good books this week!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy all your new books. I have still not read The Pillars of the Earth! I feel like the only person who hasn't read it.
ReplyDeleteWow you did terrific at the book sale! Enjoy your books!
ReplyDeleteThat is a crazy mix of books! I hope they're all terrific!
ReplyDeleteOooh very nice crop. i love Kate Atkinson and Kazuo Ishiguro. happy reading!
ReplyDeleteThat's a whack of books, good for you! Still need to get to Let the Great World Spin it's been sitting at eye level on my computer desk, taunting me since Christmas.
ReplyDeleteA Geography of Secrets sounds particularly intriguing! (I need to make a guilt list too, although I think I'm too embarrassed to make it public!)
ReplyDeleteYay for book sales! Enjoy all your books!
Julie -- I did! The book sale I went to was surprisingly fruitful.
ReplyDeleteJennifer -- Pillars was terrific. It is 1,200 pages or something crazy, but it goes really fast. Great book for summer.
Mary -- Hello! You surprised me with a comment instead of an email! And, thanks!
DCMetro -- Like I said, surprisingly good selection at that sale. I was surprised, because so often used book sales have a lot of the same best sellers that I already have or don't want.
Bermuda -- I hope so too. It will take me years to get to them all, but they are going on the overburdened TBR shelf anyway.
Bellezza -- Thanks for visiting. I want to re-read those Donne poems and see if they still appeal. Treasure Island is great. I can't believe I only read it this year. It does sound like we like the same books. I'll come over for a visit.
Snowbell -- Atkinson and Ishiguro are the kind of favorites that I put off reading because I don't want to run out of their books. That is stupid, I know. I need to just dive in and enjoy them.
Wanda -- "Whack of books" is my new favorite expression!
avisannschild -- You snuck in there while I was typing. I made my guilt list public in the hopes that it would shame me into reading those books once and for all. But it keeps growing!
ReplyDeleteThere are a few titles that are new to me. Hope you enjoy them. I read The Whistling Season by Doig. It was pretty good. Loved Pillars of the Earth but thought World Without End needed editing in a big way and was just more of the same. Russo is one of my fav authors but I've enjoyed his earlier books a bit more than his last two. Didn't hate them, though. I have the Mitford book on my shelf but haven't read it yet.
ReplyDeleteWow, so many good books to look forward to reading!
Awesome list! I am going to have to read some of K. I.'s work (that's the best I can do without copying his name).
ReplyDeleteI loved LET THE GREAT WORLD SPIN.
Mine is posted at my book blog 5 Minutes for Books
Mary -- I've heard mixed views on World Without End. Hopefully, it will strike me the right way. Although it will take me a while to get to it.
ReplyDeleteJennifer -- Thanks for visiting and leaving your link. I am looking forward to Let the Great World Spin. I loved the Man on Wire movie, so the idea of the book appeals to me.
Great books this week! I loved Let the Great World Spin and everything Richard Russo writes, too.
ReplyDeleteJoAnn -- thanks for stopping by!
