EARLY BIRDS: I am experimenting with getting this post up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. We'll try it this way for a couple of months to see if people like the option of early posting. If you have feelings one way or the other, please comment.
TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, Google+, or other social media, please post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I am trying to follow all Book Beginning participants on whatever interweb sites you are on, so please let me know if I have missed any and I will catch up.
MR. LINKY: Please leave a link to your post below. If you don't have a blog, but want to participate, please leave a comment with your Book Beginning.
MY BOOK BEGINNING
Two seemingly unconnected events heralded the summons of Mr. George Smiley from his dubious retirement.
-- Smiley's People by John le Carré.
This is the third book in The Karla Trilogy that begins with Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (reviewed) and The Honourable Schoolboy (reviewed).
Thanks for putting the linky up early, Gilion. I think it's a great idea. I like this opening, I wonder why his previous retirement was 'dubious'...!
ReplyDeleteYes, I like the early link too, even though I'm a bit later doing this today!
ReplyDeleteI loved the TV version of Le Carre's books years ago - I'll get round to reading his books one day, I hope.
I have never read Le Carre but I am now very much intrigued! Thanks for hosting this fun link-up. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteHappy Reading,
Rebecca @ The Key to the Gate
Sounds almost ominous....thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteJohn Le Carre is pretty darn awesome, isn't he? Great beginning!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a preference for early or late; I usually put my post up on Friday because I'm not really organized enough to get it together earlier! :)
Nice beginning. I am curious about what makes his retirement dubious. I really should read this whole series. I have only read one or two. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI wonder what made him get out of his retirement.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting every week! I like the early link up because I have started posting my Book Beginnings on Thursday so I can do another post on Friday.
ReplyDeleteNice beginning. It has been a while since I read anything by Le Carre. I really should do so again soon. Hope you enjoy this one.
ReplyDeleteAs a fan of le Carré, I recommend you read Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy first, before reading Smiley's People. Tinker, Tailor is the first of a trilogy, and Smiley's People is the last. Some stuff happens in TTSS that will help frame what's going on in SP, and in the middle book, Honourable Schoolboy, too.
ReplyDeleteJust a thought.
Don't worry, Winslow, I am so Teutonic in my reading habits, it would be all but impossible for me to read the books of a trilogy out of order! I read the other two last year. Links to my reviews are in the post above.
