EARLY BIRDS: I am experimenting with getting this post up Thursday evening for those who like to get their posts up and linked early on. We'll try it this way for a couple of months to see if people like the option of early posting. If you have feelings one way or the other, please comment.
TWITTER, ETC: If you are on Twitter, Google+, or other social media, please post using the hash tag #BookBeginnings. I am trying to follow all Book Beginning participants on whatever interweb sites you are on, so please let me know if I have missed any and I will catch up.
MR. LINKY: Please leave a link to your post below. If you don't have a blog, but want to participate, please leave a comment with your Book Beginning.
MY BOOK BEGINNING
The dying actress arrived in his village the only way one could come directly -- in a boat that motored into the cove, lurched past the rock jetty, and bumped against the end of the pier.
-- Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. Chapter 1 is headed April 1962, Porto Vergogna, Italy.
This is my Books Club selection for July and I can't wait to dive into it.
Hi Gilion,
ReplyDeleteI do hope that I am not on my own in loving the fact that you have decided to publish your post and put up the link for Book Beginnings, on a Thursday evening.
Given the difference in time zones, that is already the early morning, here in the UK and perfect for posting. If you publish on Friday US time, then I will have already left for work on the Friday morning and am unable to publish until the evening, which will always put me at the bottom of the 'linky' pile!
I have seen 'Beautiful Ruins' featured on several of the blogs I visit regularly and although the book has received several hundred excellent reviews, I haven't come across any from my regular circle of blogging friends.
The first lines sound poignant and almost lonely and would definitely make me read on, to discover just why the actress has fekt the need to visit this particular place, at the end of her life.
I love the cover and the fantastic acclaim that, to what is all intents a love story written by a man, the book has received. Not wishing to sound sexist in any way, I would be tempted to read it for that reason alone, as the only other male author who has made such a success and impact, in this particular genre, for me personally, is Nicholas Sparks.
Nice post, thanks for hosting and have a good weekend.
Yvonne

My book club read Beautiful Ruins a few months ago and everyone liked it. I didn't think it lived up to all the hype, but I still enjoyed it.

Good opening. Sounds like an interesting read. Hope you enjoy reading it.
ReplyDeleteThis book is extremely popular at my county library system of 40 libraries, but not at my branch. I haven't heard much about it.
