MY BOOK BEGINNING

My parents' paths first crossed in a museum on 23rd Street in New York.

-- Personal History by Katharine Graham.

That is a disappointingly prosaic opening line for a Pulitzer-winning autobiography of the fascinating woman who ran the Washington Post through so many turbulent years.  But her story picks up soon enough.

  2. Not the most exciting of openings, but I'm sure it gets better as the book progresses. Hope you enjoy it.

  4. I don't read many biographies but this person must have had an interesting life. I agree the opening lacks "punch" but it does set the stage. Happy reading!

  5. That first sentence definitely doesn't give much away.

  6. I agree - the opening doesn't grab the reader, but it does tell us that her parents liked to read. Maybe that says something about the way they raised her.

  7. I kind of like that first sentence. After all, if they hadn't met, there would have been no KG. :<)

  10. As acknowledged by the literary world, PERSONAL HISTORY is an engaging book. In fact, I could not put it down! It is a fascinating view of social and political D.C.
