Mailbox Monday

Thanks for joining me for Mailbox Monday! MM was created by Marcia at The Printed Page, who graciously hosted it for a long, long time, before turning it into a touring meme (details here).

I'm Booking It is hosting in March.

The one book I got last week was one I really wanted, so I am quite excited. It is from the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program. I must be making some progress on that list.

One Was a Soldier by Julia Spencer-Fleming.  This is the latest in her series featuring Clare Fergusson and Russ Van Alstyn. It is one of my very favorite mystery series and I have read all the others, so I am looking forward to this one right away.

Also last week I got -- but not for myself -- a Kindle.  It is for my stepdaughter's birthday present.  She's in veterinary school and will be spending the summer in Africa, teaching chicken farming or goat husbandry or something along those lines. She asked for the Kindle because she won't be able to haul enough book books there with her.

Any thoughts on this new 3G Kindle compared to the old one?Does she need to get a case for it, like with an iPod?

And any suggestions for the best free eBooks? I'd like to put a couple of books on there for her, but I blew the birthday budget with the gadget itself.

  1. Your books look good, I've put One Was a Soldier on my wish list.

I'd get a case for the Kindle just to protect it, esp. the screen.

There are lots of classics that are always free, if that's what she likes. Also I'd look at the free book list every week for new freebies. I've gotten some popular authors books free that don't stay that way for long.

I have Gen. 2 and don't know how that compares to the new one. Hope she enjoys it! Well, no hope about it, I know she'll enjoy it!

  2. Having spent a little time in Africa, I can tell you that getting a Kindle is a great idea. Books are very expensive there compared to most everything else. But I can also say one of the most satisfying moments I had was when I gave the books I had bought to my African co-workers who fell upon them like starving people. It gave me a new appreciation for books as a precious commodity.

And a new Julia Spencer-Fleming mystery! That's good news!

  3. YES, get a sturdy case!! The one time mine wasn't in a case (the kind that connects via the hinges) I knocked it off a chair, it landed on carpet and the top 1/3 of the screen went black. Amazon quickly replaced it but there was some cost to me. My daughter bought the latest version (I have the Kindle 2) and she loves it. What a thoughtful step-mom you are!

  4. Thanks for all the info on the Kindle! Especially about the case.

Maybe I'll send her a couple of paper books too that she can leave behind -- good idea!

  6. Your book looks great!

The Kindle sounds like the perfect gift for your stepdaughter. I do think she'll want a case. Watch Books on the Knob - it lists free books all the time.

  9. Ditto on what others have said about the Kindle purchase -- having traveled abroad with an ereader, it really is a space saver and a mental health saver! So thoughtful!

  10. I just signed up for the GoodReads giveaway on One Was a Soldier--lucky you, being able to read it now! I find myself single-minded when it comes to reading this series--reading at top speed and putting everything else on the back burner.

Hope it's good--will be checking back for a review.
