A handful of books have won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award -- the two heavyweights of American literature.
These double-dippers are:
The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx;
The Color Purple by Alice Walker;
Rabbit is Rich by John Updike;
The Fixer by Bernard Malamud;
The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter; and
A Fable by William Faulkner.

Quick, friendly, FYI, as I see you have your challenge going. But Oscar Wao is not a double dipper. It did not win the National Book Award.
ReplyDeleteScrew up on my part! Thanks for the catch. I fixed it.
ReplyDeleteBut this limits the choices for the cross over pick.
You can't go wrong with any of those six books, though. I'm not as high on The Color Purple as everyone else seems to be and question the choice by both the Pulitzer and NBA judges. But, hey, the NBA also chose the quickly forgotten Paco's Story over the modern classic Beloved one year, so what do they know?
ReplyDeleteI think I will stick with 2 National winners and 2 Publitzers. Is this alright?
ReplyDeleteTea -- Certainly! I set up the challenge as a three-book thing, but gave the "official" option of reading two of each and skipping one of the double dippers. No problem!
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
I am having fun. I had fun last night rummaging through my bookshelves. I might start one of my winners tonight. This is just plum great. ::::))))
