Mailbox Monday

Thanks mostly to the Oregon State University Press, I had a very full mailbox last week and a long list for Mailbox Monday.

Jumptown: The Golden Years of Portland Jazz 1942-1957 by Robert Dietsche (Hubby is a huge classic jazz fan, so most of what we listen to is jazz from this era. I am looking forward to learning about Portland's jazz history.)

Another Way the River Has: Taut True Tales from the Northwest by Robin Cody

City Limits: Walking Portland's Boundary by David Oates

An Architectural Guidebook to Portland by Bart King

The Grail: A Year Ambling & Shambling Through an Oregon Vinyard in Pursuit of the Best Pinot Noir Wine in the Whole Wild World by Brian Doyle (This looks fantastic!)

I also got a novel in the mail from my favorite book publicist:

The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott by Kelly O'Connor McNees

And I found a boxed set of the first six volumes of John Galsworthy's Forsyte Saga. I have been meaning to read this for years and I already have the last three volumes in the same Scribner's edition. Thelast three aren't boxed, but at least all the books match.

The Man of Property

In Chancery

To Let

The Silver Spoon

The White Monkey

Swan Song

  1. I am so jealous of the Galsworthys! I have been looking for the last 6 (2) for about 7 years now - ever since the PBS/BBC miniseries of the first 3 (1) Forsyte books. I keep hoping they'll do the rest of the books and that will inspire the publisher to reprint those volumes as well.

  2. Well, I'm a little envious of those Galsworthy's, too! Just loved the first three (combined in 1 edition - companion to the series), but have never been able to find the rest.

  3. I think I have a copy of the Forsythe Saga in one volume (is that possible?) from a used book sale at the library. It means I one day hope to pull it out and read it?! Loved the Masterpiece Theater series on Tv. You have a nicce set of books this week!

  4. You will LOVE the Forsyte Saga. And then you have to find a copy of the miniseries, which I watched breathlessly when it was on several years ago. It is totally worthwhile.

  5. At first you had a great theme going on! The Last Summer of Louisa May Alcott sounds so good!

  7. Carin & JoAnn -- I am excited to find the set too. I have that 3-in-1 book of the first three volumes, and I had the last three that I found at a garage sale last summer, but I have been looking for the middle three.

So now I have the whole matching set, plus the 3-in-1 of the first three. I'm going to pass that one on to my sister.

BD -- Your one volume set may be the first three, the same 3-in-1 I have. It says "Forsyte Saga" on the cover, but really is the first three volumes of nine (plus intermediate stories in between some of the novels).

I don't know much about it (must wiki), but I gather that the first three were the original "saga" and then he added on. The Masterpiece Theater series is the first three volumes, I think.

SocrMom -- I am looking forward to this. And to the miniseries!

Bermuda -- Yes, I had an All Oregon theme going there, thanks to the OSU Press. I'll be "reading local" this spring!

  15. Beth -- Yes, the River book looks really appealing. I can't wait!

Booksync & Becky -- I don't know about the Alcott novel. I didn't care for March, which was about the father in Little Women going off to the Civil War, and it kind of put be against Little Women, therefore Alcott. So I have a it of a bad attitude about it. Hopefully, it will win me over.

Diane -- Thanks! And thanks for visiting. You have a good week to.

Suko -- Thanks for the link!

  16. The Forsyte Saga is so amazing. I did have all the books combined into one big book, back when the BBC miniseries came out. And if you haven't caught that miniseries, Damian Lewis is unbelievable as Soames Forsyte.

  17. I've also meant to do The Forsyte Saga...it's (a huge tome) in the library on a high shelf looking down reproachfully when I walk by.
