But I agree that it would have been a thousand times better without all the preaching and attitude toward people who have different views.

Thanks for offering to link to my review: http://bookretreat.blogspot.com/2013/03/Juliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00339046013754121975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508267865632365231.post-66915562877783980392009-07-08T23:09:30.410-07:002009-07-08T23:09:30.410-07:00Have you read "In Defense of Food" by Mi...Have you read "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan? That is one entire book that is pedantry, even if he is right. So I actually think this was much more story based than other such books, and is more of a guide that pure "danger! danger!". I especially enjoyed the section on cheese making - I'm going to try that myself.

I agree that not everyone has a Boris Mannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13244692303143796660noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508267865632365231.post-21399635659909564012009-01-31T06:26:00.000-08:002009-01-31T06:26:00.000-08:00Your review was right on: a good concept that neve...Your review was right on: a good concept that never quite came to fruition (pardon the pun) because of the tone. I thought the centerpiece "Vegetannual" was kind of . . . boring. Portland can be a little extreme in it's foodie views, so we are constantly bombarded with lectures more pedantic than Kingsolver's -- I get inured to being bossed around and forget that Portland's collective views don't always reflect how a lot of the country thinks.Gilion at Rose City Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18080293172467000794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508267865632365231.post-32318054537337710012009-01-30T03:20:00.000-08:002009-01-30T03:20:00.000-08:00That's unfortunate about the tone of the book. This sounds a bit like The Omnivore's dilemma. I thought Pollan did a pretty decent job of trying to present multiple points of view.Nicole (Linus's Blanket)https://www.blogger.com/profile/12473607646939202824noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508267865632365231.post-42387765083470752402009-01-29T19:21:00.000-08:002009-01-29T19:21:00.000-08:00To bad about the elitism. And I certainly don't need anyone "shaking their finger" at me.
Great review!Terri B.https://www.blogger.com/profile/12215878121282668358noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508267865632365231.post-35516106913479321002009-01-29T13:47:00.000-08:002009-01-29T13:47:00.000-08:00I agree totally. And it also seemed to me that Barbara in particular would brook no excuses for eating processed food now and then.

I did find that the tone was less annoying as the book went on, but I wondered how many readers who didn't already agree with her basic idea would get that far.Teresahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09896331683344872038noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508267865632365231.post-53032398012956756822009-01-29T08:10:00.000-08:002009-01-29T08:10:00.000-08:00I read this, and enjoyed it in the same ways that ...I read this, and enjoyed it in the same ways that you did. The whole time I couldn't stop thinking: This is for sure a book about a group of wealthy people who can leave their state and for a year not do much besides work the land.

I don't know, it just bethany (dreadlock girl)https://www.blogger.com/profile/02565178664993925800noreply@blogger.com
