Teaser Tuesday: The Valley of the Dolls

"Love is companionship, having friends in common, the same interests.  Sex is the connotation you are placing on love, and let me tell you, young lady, that if and when it does exist, it dies very quickly after marriage -- or as soon as the girl learns what it's all about."

-- Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann.

Ha!
You see the set up -- the stuffy New England mom is teaching her college-aged daughter the ways of the world. Of course, the daughter is going to head off to New York City and see if she can't prove her mom wrong.

I am reading this for the Birth Year Reading Challenge hosted by the Hotchpot Cafe. I've always secretly wanted to.

Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by Should Be Reading, where you can find the official rules for this weekly event.

  1. Should I admit this? I read Valley of the Dolls way back when it first came out (Dark Ages), and really enjoyed it. Trashy, but fun trashy. Probably not something I'd re-read, of course, but I love the teaser!

    Here’s mine.

  2. I've never read that book, and probably never will, I have to many other books waiting on my bookshelf to be read.

  3. I have had this book for a while. Now I am going to wait and see how you like it before I read it.

  4. I remember when my mom read it when it came out. Wouldn't let me see the movie. I think I did read it years later. Caused quite the talk when it came out.

  5. Joy -- You must have been a toddler when this came out! Thanks for the link.

Ann -- I probably wouldn't have read it if I wasn't looking for books printed the year I was born. But I enjoy reading Mid-Century fiction, so I am having fun with it.

BookQuoter -- So far, it is a little stilted and the characters are pretty cardboard. But I've only read 20 pages, so maybe it will loosen up a bit.

Midlife -- My mom would never let me see the movie either. That may be why I want to read it now. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I like the concept of Birthyear challenge--I'll have to see what I could read that came out in my birthyear! Just missed To Kill a Mockingbird :)

I've always wanted to read Valley of the Dolls--curious about what caused all that fuss way back then :)

  7. I like the idea of the Birth Year challenge. I should find out what came out in *mumblemumble*. Of course, if I admitted I was reading that book for such a challenge, people would know my age. Gasp!

Ahem. Anyway. Valley of the Dolls is one I think I should have read by now, but haven't yet. Maybe I'll take your reading it as my cue.

Meanwhile, my own teaser is at Bookishgal.

  8. OMG this takes me back. I read this when I was a teenager and my mum never checked what books I was reading. LOL, it led me to Jackie Collins!

  11. I loved Valley of the Dolls - each time I read it!! I am going to check right now and see what books were published the year I was born! I am hopping by from the Hop and am a new follower.
I also enjoyed the first two Stieg Larsson books - waiting for the paperback of the third.
